NEW YORK – Seton Hall midfielder Eva Gonzalez (Mesquite, Texas) was one of the 11 newcomers named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
With the announcement, Gonzalez becomes sixth Pirate in program history to land on the All-Freshman Team and the first since three-time All-BIG EAST honoree Katie Ritter ’14 in 2010.
Other Seton Hall All-Rookie selections include Rita Massot (2003), Jocelyn Dumaresq (2000), Brigid Sullivan (1998) and the legendary Kelly Smith (1997).
"This is a well-deserved honor for Eva and we are extremely proud of her," said head coach Rick Stainton. "It's a tremendous accomplishment when you consider all she has had to balance over the past few months. Adjusting to college on and off the field is difficult enough for most freshmen. When you consider that she missed part of our preseason training, as well as two separate stints during the season because of international duty, it really is a testament to her dedication that she came in and played at a level that garnered such recognition."
For The Hall, Gonzalez appeared in 14 matches and finished second among the Pirates’ group of 11 freshmen with nine starts – five of which came in conference play. Her first career point came in just her third collegiate appearance with an assist against Penn (Aug. 30) and she later recorded another helper against Creighton (Oct. 8) to finish tied for the team-lead with two assists on the campaign.
Gonzalez joins standout defender Cathy Chukuka (Marlboro, N.J.) as current Pirates who have been honored at the conference level. Chukuka took home All-BIG EAST Third Team honors as a freshman in 2013.
An integral part of the Mexican U-20 National Team, Gonzalez competed at the Women's NTC Invitational hosted by U.S. Soccer in June and was called back into the side three different times from August to October as the squad readies for the U-20 CONCACAF Championship and FIFA World Cup qualifying in December.
The Mesquite, Texas native previously captained a historic run to the U-17 CONCACAF Gold Cup title in 2013 and will be a part of the side that travels to Honduras to participate in the upcoming tournament from December 3-13.
